Okay you KNOW I love tacos and of course you also, know I get an itch for exploration. THUS, I drive to places and get the skinny and well the “noms,” it is my crusade. Just like Indiana Jones I believe it “belongs in a museum'”aka my stomach.
I search my area for good tacos or any eats that deserve mentioning and this place called Casita Taqueria is one of those. It’s in St. Petersburg off of Central Avenue. I love this area, because it is artistic and respects the community of Lgbtq. It’s a happy and open atmosphere where you are welcome no matter your orientation.
But driving down Central Avenue in the Ol’ Doom Buggy I found this tasty establishment with it’s candy skull design on the front. Although the parking falls short the tacos don’t. I have to say their carne asada tacos are the best and the queso I could drown in, possibly bathe in.
It is a very busy place, but the atmosphere can’t be denied. It has a modern slash old Mexican feel with it’s rustic rote iron chandelier topped with lager beer bottles and Mucha-Lucha masks decorated across the walls and again candy skulls. It’s the kind of place I’d like to kick back sip a cold dark beer and eat my fill of tacos while watching passerby’s come and go.
One of my favorite places to “stay at home vacation” is St Augustine Florida. It has that Old timey feel with the a mixture of Spanish, but also French and English architectural styles. In my mind I immediately think haunted and to be sure that’s another talking point for another day. I enjoy St. Augustine not only for keeping it’s original structures, but you can smell the ocean off the Bridge of Lions, but what is enthralling is the fortifications of Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas which has never lost a battle in over 300 years.
The historic city of St. Augustine, Florida, is centered around two impressive fortifications: Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas. Given that St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States, these famous buildings serve as monuments to the hardships and victories of early colonial America. The rich histories and distinctive qualities of Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas will be discussed in this article, along with their significant contributions to the formation of the country’s history.
Built between 1672 and 1695, the Castillo de San Marcos is the pinnacle of Spanish military architecture in the New World. The purpose of this massive stronghold was to protect Spanish Florida’s capital city, St. Augustine, from possible attacks and threats. The resilience of the fort was greatly enhanced by the decision to use coquina, a locally quarried sedimentary rock made primarily of crushed shells, as the main building material. The incredible material coquina reduced damage and absorbed cannonballs, transforming the Castillo into a formidable defensive fortress. The fort was a major player in the rivalries and conflicts that defined colonial America throughout its history. It was the target of several sieges and was taken over by the Spanish, British, and American forces, among other European powers. When Spain gave Florida to the United States in 1821, it was the last time it changed hands. In the 19th century, the fort was renamed Fort Marion in honor of Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War hero, but it subsequently went back to its original name.
It crazy how you can walk across it’s grassy knolls, scream and shout playfully, even have picnics while poking around where soldiers stood day and night following orders awaiting possible death. You can even see bullet holes in the walls as you walk around in the sunlight it almost seems off-putting and macabre.
However, as dark as it is, with respect it’s comforting to walk where many others have and understand the weight they carried, the fear, the anger, and duty. You can still see the ricochet of bullets in the walls and some claim to have seen apparitions.
What are your thoughts? Do you think it’s residual energy with all that fear and anger? Or is it a dead place filled with old memories and we of the living stamp upon it with our feet blindly to stare upon it digesting information? Do you find it respectful?
As always, the world turns and we must Keep On Brewin.
Hello Fellow Readers, I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Today I was feeling hungry as well as needing to step out and stretch my legs. I also, like to mention I am a taco enthusiast, but I wanted something with a little more flair. Which is hard to say because I practically eat them AT LEAST once a week.
So on my search for exploration and most importantly tacos, I came upon this interesting creation called a Quesabirria. It is a delicious beef taco that is cooked with chiles. The beef is shredded, the corn tortilla dipped in the juices of said beef prepared with white onions, cilantro, and white cheese(Oaxaca). IT GETS BETTER, it is fried and served with a consomme.
I had to have it and at least ten, like I said I was hungry. I found a place in Ybor City down here in Tampa that makes them called Jimmy’s Tacos. It was a delicious adventure I couldn’t resist tacos and my favorite eccentric downtown, Ybor. I hopped into my Doom Buggy aka Jeep and made my way down.
Let me give you the lowdown on Ybor City to better understand my enthusiasm. It is a mixture of revitalized cigar manufacturing buildings, some were revamped for active businesses squeezed in with newer homes and structures, but most importantly, chickens roam free. I know, odd right? Nowhere else in Tampa have chickens strutting about, but Ybor City does. FYI don’t try to catch or pick up the wild chickens, one they are federally protect and two, spurs.
My arrival to Jimmy’s Tacos was no less outlandish. It is a quaint building nestled around brick and wood structures, railroad tracks, large trees and of course chickens. Usually whats good for the gander is good for the goose, but here the chickens roam about hoping for morsels and so was I. It is a wonderful spot with outside seating that felt cozy and relaxing. There was a line so, I knew it had to be good, I ordered three of these bad boys, along with a margarita of course. I sat back and sipped soaking in the sun and waited. Was the wait long? No, but the exploration to find these delicious treasures was everything and more.
These quesabirrias practically melt in your mouth, the lime flavor from the cilantro, the crunch of the onion, the juicy tender beef, and gooey melty goodness of the cheese was like an explosive symphony in my mouth. Lastly, the consomme they served with the quesabirrias need not be forgotten, I dredged those goodies in after each bite. Let me tell you it was hard not to pick up the cup and drink it alone. If I were to give a five star review I’d give them fifty it was that damn good.
IF I were you I would jump in that steel horse and make a quick move to get Jimmy’s quesabirrias. When you do, get five or ten so that way when you get home, you can relive the experience minus the chicken companions of course.
Alright, I couldn’t help it, after watching Haunted Mansion I had an urge for gumbo. I love gumbo, it is definitely a homey dish filled with rich flavor and has you going for seconds, possibly thirds. However, I wondered where in New Orleans IS the best gumbo? I’ve only been to New Orleans once and you bet your sweet dippy I’m going back again in the near future. So Let’s dive into a little, “about me,” on Ol’ New Orleans.
Now, New Orleans is a city known for its rich and diverse culinary traditions, and at the heart of its vibrant food scene lies a dish that embodies the essence of Creole and Cajun cooking: gumbo. When it comes to experiencing the best gumbo in New Orleans, one can embark on a culinary journey that takes you through the city’s history, culture, and flavors, all in one savory bowl.
First, the environment is crucial. Seek out a reputable gumbo joint or an authentic, locally-owned restaurant for the best gumbo experience in New Orleans; many of these can be found in areas like the Garden District, Treme, or the French Quarter. St. Pete’s, Gumbo Shop is one such famous location. I never tried gumbo from Gumbo Shop but I enjoyed a hefty bowl over at Olde Nola Cookery and their gumbo was divine.
At home I try to bring a piece of that swanky New Orleans to the table. Personably, I throw on some Mardi Gra music and dance around my kitchen making my own gumbo from scratch which isn’t TOO hard, except for the roux. The roux is a game of patience and a lot of whisking and yes, your wrist will want to fall off, but it is worth it in the end. The recipe I use is from https://tastesbetterfromscratch.com/authentic-new-orleans-style-gumbo/ and Lauren provides a lot of helpful information. You don’t have to get too crazy with the meat you can go straight chicken or chicken and andouille sausage or if you’re feeling fancy you can add shrimp. RIce is a must and my favorite cajun seasoning to use is the CajunTwo Step by Justin Chiasson and here is the link to buy this outstanding seasoning https://thecajuntwostep.com/
Its getting closer to that spooky time of the year, one of my favorite holidays, Halloween and who doesn’t love it? Costumes, candy, decorations and my most loved season fall. I lavish in the colors changing on the leaves, the crisp cool breeze and the hot apple cider. Well, I did until I moved to Florida its hot year round with a few dips to make you FEEL like your in sweater weather.
Anyways, today, I wanted to talk about one of my favorite rides at Disney, The Haunted Mansion. In fact I loved the ride so much I named my Jeep, Doom Buggy after the carts you ride in. However, as much as I enjoy the shrieks and bangs at the Haunted Mansion, I want to take you on a jaunt about the new movie of the ghostly ride.
I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear that Disney was coming out with a new movie this year. It was very hard to wait all summer, it literally made me feel like a kid. But when it finally arrived it was worth the wait and the trailer although creepy and fun didn’t do it justice. I just want to give props for the original version, because I love the Eddie Murphy version, because well, Eddie Murphy. As always he brought his A game for the beloved attraction. The new one had the setting showcasing one of my favorite city’s, New Orleans. I will talk more about the beloved city of New Orleans at a later date because, this is about the movie.
I feel that Disney captured the feel of the exotic sights, smells, and music of New Orleans. Of course the epicenter, the Mansion itself is gorgeous as always with its beautiful French Quarter style and looming ominously to onlookers. The ghosts, although creepy in the first Haunted Mansion movie, this time they’re downright terrifying. The plot is slightly different than the original story line of Master Gracey hung himself after the death of his beloved Emily. This time Master Gracey does make an appearance, but there’s something a little more sinister behind the veil than a simple heart broken ghost searching for his long departed Emily. Something or rather someone that has the ghosts trapped on the Mansion’s grounds with a chilling plan waiting to be unleash.
I won’t go any further and spoil all the goods, but rather I’d like to say the ragtag cast of characters become a ghost hunting dream team that the Scooby Doo gang would give a nod of approval. The hero’s journey and growth of the characters that the writers produced flows wonderfully. All and all it is a fantastic edition to Disney vast collection of stories.
As always, “There’s always room for one more,” and to Keep on Brewin.
Listen, I’ve been wanting to explore haunted houses FOREVER! I was recently given an opportunity. Sir Henry’s, located in Plant City provided me the gateway I’ve been searching for. Reader, oh boy did they deliver. Zach Glaros was nothing short of a phenomenal showman.
The Sir Henry’s Haunted Trail was amazing, what sets it a part from all the other trails is heart. They have what trails are missing, and that’s family. Their attention to detail and characterization is a breath of fresh air. This girl has seen characters push for their “monies worth,” but these actors make you feel that you’re in the story. The artists such as Lindsey and Mr. Glaros himself, have out done themselves in creating sets that come alive. You’re a fish hooked into something more deeper than you think. I have to say if you want to be scared shitless go to Sir Henry’s Haunted Trail. What’s different compared to the other haunted houses is that they haven’t lost their focus, it’s not about numbers but quality we all want to be scared and Sir Henry’s does exactly that.
I feel that my experience was exponentially better than yours. Sir Henry’s Haunted Trail not only brings characters to life , but makes you inhale it. That scent you’re breathing isn’t just your mammy’s perfume you’re breathing in, that stillness in the dark does move and it’s Sir Henry’s crew ready to make you shake at your knees, You should be ready to sweat under their antics.
When you think about ghosts where do you think they inhabit? Is it in another state, another country, around the corner or in your own home? I’ve been DYING to go to New Orleans and guess what? IM HERE. I’ve been on this “ghost/ paranormal” journey for what seems like, five years? I’ve tried to not acknowledge the in between so to speak for years, but it’s time to put on the big girl pants and not turn a blind eye to the possibility. I’ve had too many bangs and the “other” feelings to say otherwise. Heck, I’ve had tech go on the fritz because of it. Dauphine Hotel has an over flow of it all. However, I heard that Bloody Mary is the place to go for ghost tours and it very own voodoo store and museum. Tonight, we are going to try to see if the ghosties want to talk. I’ll let you know if I’m successful.
I hope all is well, we here at BrewFeeds are trying to spread our wings and dive into all of what Tampa has to offer. Our newest venture is to a fantastic place that you must seek out. It’s called Cru Cellars, a wonderful wine bar and restaurant it’s a gorgeous spot along south Mac Dill road in the Palma Ceia District of downtown Tampa. The space has an airy open atmosphere with over 350 wines to choose from that are not only everyday sippers and easy on the wallet but are so unique you can’t get anywhere else. In the front of the building there’s a long table for parties or for their Blind Wine tasting events where patrons have to guess what wine is in the paper bag to test out their tongue’s flavor sense. Could it be a medium red? A dry Riesling? I know I’m game to try.
The owner Jennifer has recently
renovated a part of Cru creating a very swanky intimate setting that
is reminiscent of the flavor within Frank Sinatra’s time. Deep blue
velvet booths and mood lighting make it both luxurious and secret.
The back of the restaurant has the newly done backsplash in black and
white behind the bar and of course the wine garden itself tucked away
from the outside cares of the world. Honestly, it’s a gem not to
mention their menu is to die for, top favorite menu items such as the
Cru Burger and Steak Frittes are the must-have entrees while the
cheese curds and of course their cheese selection is phenomenal, but
you can never go wrong with cheese.
Cru Cellars brings a lot to the
table what with their large selection of affordable wines, light
delicious flavors in food and events not to mention a wine club. Now,
I’ll give you a tidbit on the wine club because I’m keen on
signing up as well, their wine club comes three different ways all
involving wine and even a free appetizer to boot each month. The
prices vary depending on which membership you choose. I recommend
this slice of heaven for a girl’s night, date night or any time
honestly, when you need a glass or two inside or out in the moonlight
in their secluded wine garden. I give Cru Cellars five stars for
ambiance and brilliance, and I can’t wait to go back again for a
sip and a sigh of delight.
Something to look forward to in the year 2020, their third location in Westshore Marina on Gandy. As for this year especially this Saturday, check out their nine year anniversary party which is on October 26, 2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm. They’re located at 2506 S MacDill Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33629. Come enjoy their exquisite wine and food during this momentous occasion! The sun was shining, the skies are a bright and bold blue and the smell of spring perfumed the air it was the perfect day to be at the most magical place on earth, Disney! Minus the sweltering humidity that could melt your face off like the bad guy in The Last Crusade in Indiana Jones, yes eyeball melting sweltering heat. Today Brewfeeders, yours truly traversed the cobbled streets of Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Whenever, I’ve gone to Disney I swear I need about ten more pairs of eyes. Everything is breathtaking and your senses are fucking overloaded with sounds, delicious aromas, and colors abundant from buildings, mouse merch, and the flowers bursting from every corner. It made it even more magical that it was Dapper Day, however, I was under dressed, next time it won’t be so. Everyone was dressed to the nines ladies wearing the retro dresses of Joan Cleaver Leave It To Beaver dresses, men in boaters or fedoras, it was eye popping. So, on this magical day with senses exploding, I wasn’t here for any particular reason other than sight seeing and the rides which I might add the last time I went there were a few less rides and attractions to get into, ahem not saying how long. But back on track here! The two new rides resided in the Fantasy Land, Snow White ride, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Under the Sea- Journey of The Little Mermaid, both were amazing! I love rides, first off the Seven Dwarves ride was full of twists and turns, ups and downs, very exhilarating, where as the Under the Sea was filled with bubbles and nostalgia. The amount of detail leading up to each ride was astounding. The planning and attention to detail made me feel that they dropped my ass into the world of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and the Little Mermaid. On the last leg of the Magic Kingdom trail was the favorites trot, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion, nothing like being in a haunted buggy seeing friendly apparitions and tricks or sailing the high seas fighting with cutlets and shooting muskets, or at least that’s what it feels like going in and setting sail on each ride. After sweltering in the heat we made our way to Epcot in all its glory. Violet Lemonade ears galore!! Which is the new ears this season, purple and orchids everywhere in non alcoholic drinks, shirts, and cups! There is also The Orange Bird, having its own slushie drink and cup to refresh oneself with! Adorable portraits and souvenirs for the iconic bird. Now this is just the drink portions, the food and scenery were just as palpable. Coconut shrimp skewers from the Caribbean area and steak tips from Canada. At the end with much trudging I can say with fucking elation that there are more Dapper days ahead and drinks can be made by hand at home if you can’t make the trek to Florida. For more Dapper Day extravaganza s to come visit http://dapperday.com/ and for your violet lemonade needs go here https://www.kaitkillebrew.com/violet-lemonade/ just so you know we here at BrewFeeds will make an alcoholic version along with the non alcoholic version of the Violet Lemonade!
A big hello to you all! It’s been months since I’ve written, guilty as charged. However, I have goodies for you all to snag your teeth in. What is it? Book reviews and places to see of course. Life gets a person down and writing becomes dry and jaded, self worth and all those woes. But I am here and all the comments and questions aren’t lost. How are you guys? Events coming up are interesting, such as the cupcake festival in November here in Tampa, and of course a sneak peek of the world of Disney and all the magic it beholds. I won’t hold back so stay tuned.
